Life is risky and nonprofit organisations especially can operate in very high-risk environments, whether that is due to unpredictable funding or working with vulnerable groups of people.  In a busy and high-pressure nonprofit, taking the time to manage these risks proactively can often slip down the list of priorities. In doing this, we increase the possibility of risk, which in turn can lead to poor management and possibly a crisis. For any nonprofit organisation, basic risk management is a fundamental to good governance.

Risk is inherent to much of our activities as nonprofit organisations. From everyday operations to new development projects, it cannot be avoided. However, most risks can be anticipated, and therefore plans can be put in place to deal with them should they arise.
